The Buckinghamshire Building Society was founded in 1907 in Chalfont St Giles by a group of local businessmen. Originally called the Chalfont & District Permanent Building Society it was renamed the Buckinghamshire in 1961, and expanded in the eighties to include a second branch in Chalfont St Peter. In 1998 the original building in Chalfont St Giles was totally destroyed by fire. Once the head office reopened, plans to open a Mortgage department in the branch office were realised. Investing Members in the Society now number more than 8,000, and assets have grown from £1m in 1960 to almost £140m in 2007.
The Buckinghamshire Building Society is a Mutual Society, therefore owned by the Members. In common with all mutual societies, the Society has no shareholders to pay, so the emphasis is firmly on providing value to existing and new Members through competitive products in both the saving and borrowing sides of the business.
The Society recognises the importance of helping the local community, and frequently supports local events, schools, clubs and charities.
The Society combines a national aspect of customer support with the well-established personal service to local people that has always been its hallmark.
The continual updating of this website is another example of the Society's commitment to serving its Members and maintaining a highly competitive alternative to larger national financial organisations.
